Sponsorship: Charles Owen Pony Squad take Team Gold and Individual Silver on home turf (UK) - 4/8/2010

In an exciting and exhilarating finish to the 2010 Pony European Championships at Bishop Burton College, The Charles Owen British Pony Team have won Team Gold on home soil, some 43.1 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Germany.
It has been 3 years since Britain last won Gold back in 2007 at Freudenberg and Saturday’s Cross Country gave the six British riders the opportunity to prove that they deserved the Gold when they were the only nation to complete with six clear rounds. Course Designer Eric Winter had produced a true championship track which required positive and accurate riding from start to finish.
This fantastic result was all credit to the British Pony Team coach, Jonquil Hemming, who has worked with the riders on the run-up to the championships and throughout the week. This was also a great result for Pony Chairman, Ginnie Keen, who retires at the end of this year and will certainly bow out on a massive high.
She was justifiably proud of her young team – three of whom are GB team debutantes: “This year I’ve had six of the best riders and team mates I’ve had in a long time. They have been absolutely fantastic throughout the week and I could not be more proud. Thank you to all of our support team who have been fantastic, especially our team trainer Jonquil (Hemming) who is exceptional. I must also thank the grooms, parents, sponsors, World Class and British Eventing who have all been fantastic.”
She congratulated the team – “Well done all of you.”

Thirteen year old Sam Ecroyd from Holywell, Flintshire, became the youngest ever winner of the Charles Owen British Pony Championships this weekend at Brand Hall in Shropshire.
Sam clinched this year’s National Championship title by just 0.3 of a mark with Catherstone Nutsafe. They finished the competition on their dressage score of 44.3. Taking over the ride on the pony from previous rider Ella McEwen at the end of last year, the pair have had an impressive season so far having been placed in every outing and having not incurred a single jumping fault. Catherston Nutsafe has now won back to back National titles with two different riders and has already made two European Pony Championship appearances.
Sam was followed in second place by fourteen year old Sophie Beaty from Finedon in Northamptonshire, who was contesting her second National Pony championships with Done and Dusted VI. They too finished on their dressage score - one of only three combinations to do so in the whole competition.
Third place went to fifteen year old Jodie McGregor from Leyburn in North Yorkshire, who finished on the same score as second placed Sophie Beaty. Sophie was closer to the optimum time on the cross country which gave her the edge and meant Jodie had to settle for third.
Good performances also came from Leicestershire’s Sophie How with The Sky Master finishing in fourth, the infamous Noble Springbok, this time piloted to success by Wiltshire based Grace Walker, also thirteen, in fifth.
The event was hotly contested this year in light of the imminent selection for the Charles Owen British Pony squad who will compete in the FEI Pony European Championships. This year the British team will be able to compete for the first time in thirteen years on home turf at Bishop Burton College, 27 – 31 July 2010. The selections for the Charles Owen British Pony squad will be announced later this week.
Chairman of the Charles Owen British Pony Team, Ginnie Keen said of the event: “Janet Plant’s course was perfect; it was just what we wanted for this level of championship. Sadly we had some disappointing results but on the whole the riders and ponies did well. I must take the opportunity to thank Charles Owen not only for their support of the Pony Trials and the Pony Team but to Roy Burek from Charles Owen for taking the time to chat to riders and their parents during the prize giving.”
A shortlist of the selected riders and ponies for the Charles Owen British Pony Team who will contest the FEI European Pony Championships at the end of July will be announced at the end of the week (Friday 11th June).

Tretorn was founded in 1891 in Helsingborg, Sweden and became one of the leading manufacturers of rubber boots in Scandinavia.
Roy Burek, Managing Director of Charles Owen & Company commented: Tretorn has witnessed a gap in the market for performance riding boots and working with the designers at Puma, they have created an innovative new boot aimed at the equestrian athlete. It’s extremely exciting that such a large sportswear company is interested in equestrianism, especially with the 2012 Olympics on the horizon. It can only be seen as a positive step that such a prestigious company is researching and experimenting with new materials and designs. This presents riders with the option of using new performance technology similar to that of footballers and other Olympic athletes.”
Magnus Mansson, General Manager of Tretorn AB said: “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Charles Owen, a very professional and fine company who has the expertise required to be successful in the UK equestrian market.”
The first Tretorn riding boot was launched in Sweden in 2007, this groundbreaking boot is a collaborative project between Tretorn and top Swedish show jumper Marlin Baryard. Unlike any other riding boot, the Advanced Performance Boot is developed for the equestrian athlete. It’s crafted from micro fibre and designed to bring an innovative edge to top riders.
The boots are fast becoming the marmite of the equestrian world, with its chief advocate and cooperative designer Malin Baryard making heads turn whenever she steps in the ring. A performance boot of the highest caliber, it uses advanced modern materials combined with innovative design, to bring the long riding boot into the 21st century with a bang.

Roy Burek commented: “Tretorn boots are an alternative to leather boots and not a replacement and Charles Owen still sees strong demand for top Italian leather boot manufacturer Sergio Grasso. We feel these two companies compliment each other, the products they produce are so different and there will always be the traditional rider that will never wear anything other than leather. ” The Tretorn boots have been licensed for use by the BSJA and will be available for purchase from March 2009.

Pony racing has long been the starting point for all the top lads in Ireland and it is now beginning to provide an increasing stream of talented young jockeys over here. Flint won the Charles Owen Pony Racing Final at Aintree in both 2005 and 2006 on the same pony - Tipsy Flint, before going on to much success on the Arab Racing circuit.
Rhys moved on to Point-to-Pointing where he romped away with the National Men's Novice title with 24 winners. Flint is now hitting the headlines as a successful conditional for Philip Hobbs, recently securing two high profile Cheltenham wins on the impressive Fair Along.
Sarah Gollins, Director of PR & Marketing at Charles Owen commented: “We are thrilled to be able to support Rhys at the beginning of what I’m sure will be a long and successful career. IPC Survey: Safety in Numbers III (UK/USA) - 11-March-2008

Recent surveys carried out by publishing giant IPC Media have revealed that Charles Owen is still the number one choice for riders, with more people choosing to wear a Charles Owen helmet than any other brand. The results were provided by a nationwide survey compiled from readers of Eventing, Horse and Hound and Horse magazine.
Horse and Hound is the UK's leading equestrian magazine with a weekly readership of 257,000. As the world's oldest equestrian magazine and only weekly, it is a huge testament to the popularity of Charles Owen that for the second year running 60% of its readers wear a Charles Owen helmet.
Eventing magazine is the international voice and only magazine for the sport of horse trials, offering a valuable insight into the world of eventing. The monthly magazine has a circulation of 12,000 attracting readers from grass roots level to the international competitor. The survey showed that 67% of Eventing readers currently own a Charles Owen helmet, attesting to the confidence in the proven protection incorporated in each helmet. Charles Owen’s tried and tested triple standard dual certification scheme, ensures the rider is covered for the widest range of accident type, rather than focusing on just the rarer high energy impact. Roy Burek, Managing Director of Charles Owen & Company, said: “We are starting to understand the long term effects of mild head injuries and medics are starting to question the desirability of helmets designed on steel heads in test labs that are too strong.” Horse is the perfect magazine for the serious leisure rider who wants to get the most out of both their horse and riding, another extremely important demographic for Charles Owen. With a monthly circulation of 22,241, Charles Owen is delighted that 50% of Horse readers choose to ride in a Charles Owen hat. Roy Burek, said: “I am thrilled with the results of the surveys for all three magazines, they are a huge testament to the confidence our customers have in trusting their lives to us. Our passion for safety and quality continues to drive the company forward, manufacturing our handmade, British hats to highest of standards, with the simple aim of saving lives”.

New Technology: Anti-microbial Headbands (UK/USA) - 11-March-2008

Charles Owen & Company is thrilled to announce the introduction of anti-microbial headbands within their range of helmets. This proven technology utilizes the natural properties of silver to prevent the growth of bacteria within the fabric’s structure, keeping it fresh & hygienic.
The super soft headbands are embedded with high tech silver ions, which are bonded to the fibres at a microscopic level. These ions have the ability to reduce levels of bacteria, mould and fungi on the surface. It’s extremely effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
Silver is a natural element, with a low toxicity, and has been extensively tested by the medical laboratories. It is very safe and does not affect the performance of the product. Extensive testing has proven the longevity of silver in retaining its antimicrobial properties.
Roy Burek Managing Director and grandson of the late Charles Owen commented: “We are continually looking for new ways to improve the performance of our products, introducing antimicrobial headbands is just another way of ensuring our customers the best possible protection.”

New Award: Safety heroes recognised at the British Horse Society Sefton Awards (UK) - 12-11-2007

Heroes in the field of equestrian safety were honoured at the British Horse Society’s Sefton awards on Monday 22 October 2007. The Tarquin Award, which recognises organisations, businesses or business associates who have made a significant contribution to equestrian safety, was presented to Roy Burek, Managing Director of leading safety manufacturer Charles Owen & Co.

Mr Burek has been a strong supporter of equestrian safety for many years. Through Charles Owen & Co, he became the force behind the BHS accident reporting form which has been used for some 20 years. Roy has supported the call for all riders to wear approved riding hats and manufactures hats to suit all disciplines and rider requirements in a variety of fashionable colours.

A Royal Warrant to supply protective headwear to the Royal Mews and Buckingham Palace is a further endorsement of Charles Owen products. Roy’s relentless determination to ensure VAT was removed from children’s riding hats resulted in research that gave a definitive size range to children’s hats.

Roy’s generous advice and support while working closely with the BHS in order to educate young riders, has meant that a unique awards system aimed at educating many youngsters who would have otherwise remained ignorant is also to be highly commended.

Pony Racing: Thrilling finale to the 2007 Charles Owen Pony Racing Series. (UK) - 29-10-2007

Sam Twiston-Davies races seven lengths clear to win the 148cm Charles Owen Pony Racing Final at Aintree Racecourse, while Connor Flint romps home by an impressive ten lengths to take the 138cm title.

The Charles Owen Pony Racing Series culminated in a fiercely contested final on Saturday 27 October, as 26 budding jockeys fought it out on Jump racing’s biggest stage. Sam, the 15-year-old son of Cotswold trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, pulled out all the stops to take the spoils in the 148cm contest riding Otterburn Lady. “I thought I’d be lucky to come fourth or fifth on the form, we really didn’t expect her to do so well as she is only in her first year of racing. It was a brilliant experience and I couldn’t believe it when we passed the post in first place” said Sam.

The talented pair tracked hot favourites, Philip Prince and Rose Bengal passing them with a furlong to go and winning the race comfortably. “Dad said she’d have a good chance if I rode her properly and she stayed the distance” explained Sam. “Afterwards he said it was the best ride I had given her – I did exactly what I was told to do.”

Bookmakers favourite Philip Prince finished in second place, with Annabelle Heath on Lucy in third and Ryan While on Benjamin Boy in fourth place.

Connor Flint and Stambrook Marquesa from South Wales, kept up their winning form to take the 138cm race by a staggering ten lengths. Having only been beaten once in 20 races, Connor had high hopes for the final. Nine year-old “Molly” had been flexing her muscles during the build up to the race “she dropped me twice - which is always a good sign, she can be a bit naughty but she is fantastic” explained Connor. “I was a bit nervous beforehand and Molly was quite buzzy, but she did calm down at the start. Although I didn’t get the start I hoped, we managed to make up the ground and I can’t describe how I felt after the line – it was just brilliant.”

Connor hopes to defend his title again next season and follow in the footsteps of his cousin Rhys who won two Aintree Finals. However unlike Rhys, Connor doesn’t want to follow a career in racing – his long term ambition is to become a vet.

Bridget Andrews and Clonross Star finished second to Connor; third place went to William Twiston-Davies on Sparky Boy and fourth was Harry Derham on G-Whizz.

Rebecca Morgan, Secretary of The Pony Racing Authority, commented: “Pony Racing continues to go from strength to strength and the riders this year are particularly stylish and professional. Whilst there are some familiar racing names in the finals we are particularly encouraged that young racing enthusiasts from all backgrounds have succeeded in the sport. All 26 of the finalists have had the benefit of tuition from both The British Racing School and Northern Racing College during the Finals and we look forward to the future success of the series.”

Pony Racing: The race is on for the 2007 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals (UK) - 25/10/2007

The 2007 Charles Owen Pony Racing Series will culminate in what promises to be a thrilling and fiercely contested final at Aintree this Saturday, 27 October 2007. Young riders across the country have been chasing the coveted qualifying places through 17 qualifying race days, held at British Racecourses the length and breadth of the country.

World renowned helmet manufacturer Charles Owen & Company sponsors the series for the third consecutive year. Roy Burek, Managing Director of the Company comments: “We are delighted to be involved in the Charles Owen Pony Racing Series, particularly at such an exciting time. Pony Racing has become one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in Britain and the development of the Pony Racing Authority (PRA) earlier this year, will guarantee its continued growth and success. We have recently renewed our sponsorship of the Charles Owen Point-to-Point Series for 2008, which will act as a qualifying step into the main Racecourse Series.”

A total of 26 budding jockeys are eagerly counting down the days until they line up on Saturday, 11 riders will race for the 138cms championship while 15 battle it out for the 148cms title. One of the youngest contestants, Tabitha Worsley (12) will be partnering her brother Hector’s mount, The Little Brown Mare in the 148cms contest. Hector missed out on qualifying as he was at boarding school, so Tabitha gamely took the ride at Kempton Park. Hector holds no hard feelings and will be there on Saturday to cheer on his little sister and give her lots of last minute instructions!

With so many talented youngsters set to battle it out, it is hard to predict who will take the spoils on Aintree’s famous track - the standard is exceptional and all the contenders are taking the finals very seriously. Brothers, William and Sam Twiston-Davies, who ride Sparky Boy (138cms) and Otterburn Lady (148cms) respectively, have been getting up early to muck out and ride on the gallops before school. Both boys have a keen interest in rugby and are members of the Stow on the Wold Rugby Club, once home from school they too run up and down the gallops two or three times in an attempt to keep up their own fitness levels!

Two other dedicated finalists are making the trip all the way from Fife in Scotland, Aileen Rodwell and Bilbo Baggins are chasing the 138cms title while Kit Alexander and Brundean Bellance will contest the 148cms championship. To ensure the best possible outcome, the pair have drafted in the help of National Hunt Jockey Peter Buchanan, who has been on hand to give some valuable tuition. Sadly it will be a day of mixed feelings for Kit as he lines up for the last time with the talented Brundean Bellance, together they have won eight of their twelve starts. Kit will leave the Pony Racing ranks this year due to his age, but he is already firmly focused on his future racing career and is in the process of enrolling on the British Racing School's Amateur Jockeys course.

The first ever winner of the Pony Racing Finals in 2004, Felix de Giles has recently been appointed as Conditional Jockey for Lambourn based trainer Nicky Henderson. The 18-year-old son of Swindon trainer Jonathan de Giles began his new job with 13 Point-to-Point wins and a further 10 wins as an amateur under rules. Fellow Pony Racer, Philip Prince is planning to follow in the footsteps of De Giles. Philip has already enrolled on a four-day course at the Northern Racing College and has qualified two ponies for the finals at Aintree on Saturday. Bought in Ireland by jump jockey Paddy Merrigan, Angelic (138cms) and Rose Bengal (148cms) have enabled Philip to win 13 of 16 starts. Unlike some of his rivals Prince’s family have no racing connections, but with the help of trainer Ron Hodges and his wife Mandy, he’s confident he is in with a strong chance, particularly in the 148cms championship as Rose Bengal is unbeaten in eight races.

The Pony Racing Finals are being held at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday 27 October. Gates open at 10.30am and the first race kicks of at 13.10pm. The Charles Owen Pony Racing Final (138cm & under) starts at 16.25pm and the second Charles Owen Pony Racing Final (148cm & under) lines up at 16.55pm. Tickets cost £18 per adult and accompanied children under 16 are admitted free, to book tickets or for further information please call 0151 522 2929 or visit www.aintree.co.uk.

Karen Brown of Santa Rosa, California, recently emailed Charles Owen via their accident database form to report her daughter's injury.
Julie Brown aged 14 was riding her mother's quiet 17hh gelding school master on the 2nd March 2007. Julie had ridden the horse before and was well aquainted with him. as mum Karen watched from the sidelines Julie rode around the arena for a few minutes before deciding to halt. At the halt the normally placid gelding bucked almost vertically, as Julie struggled to keep her seat, he bucked again, dislodging her and launching her head first.
Julie subsequently recieved concussion, resulting in severe headaches, dizziness, disorientation and 20 - 30 minutes of memory loss. Treatment recieved at the Kaiser Permenete in Santa Rosa included a CT scan and the administration of pain medication. Luckily the CT scan was negative. However as mum Karen told us "I credit the helmet (GR8) with saving her life and helping to minimism injury"

Charles Owen News: Royal Warrant (UK/USA) -

Internationally renowned Safety Manufacturer Charles Owen & Co are recognised as being the Number One Choice for over 60% of riders. This is according to a recent survey by Horse & Hound magazine. Additionally the Company’s commitment to providing safety and quality to all levels of riders led to them being granted a Royal Warrant on 28th September 1988, in the 37th year of Her Majesty the Queen’s reign as her Appointed Headwear Manufacturer.
During The Queen’s reign the granting of Warrants has been restricted to herself, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, and until recently the Queen Mother. Warrants granted by the Queen Mother will continue to be held until five years after her death. The Lord Chamberlain is responsible for providing detailed information but the decision to grant a Warrant is always made personally by the Grantor concerned.
The Warrant is associated with quality and excellence and is world famous. Royal Warrant Holders are granted a number of very important privileges such as being allowed to display the words “By Appointment” and the Royal Arms of the Grantor on premises, packaging and advertising material.
Those granted Warrants have supplied goods and/or services on a regular basis for a minimum of five years. Warrants are granted to a named individual who will normally either be a Director or Partner in the business or a sole trader. Currently there are about 800 Royal Warrant Holders.
Warrants are held for a term of five years. During the fourth year Holders are asked to provide the Royal Household Tradesmen’s Warrants Committee with evidence of continued service. Warrants are withdrawn if standards are not upheld. A further guarantee of excellence in addition to the BSI Kitemark and SEI Certification that Charles Owen insists on and invests in for their products and customers.

Support News: "Only Fools on Horses" (UK) - 16/8/2006

The huge success of the recent TV show created by Endemol 'Only Fools on Horses' has reflected positively on the entire Equestrian Industry. Riding School are reporting an increase in new riders, and throughtour the sport there is a sense of renewed vigour and purpose.

Charles Owen & Co. were delighted to be approached by the Endemol Researcher assigned to the programme, and put in charge of sourcing the ultimate safety equipment for the Celebrities. The very nature of the challenge and the profile of the celebrities and the importance of HSE while making the programme meant that only the very best would do. The TV Insurance Company was insistent that the celebrities had only the best and that all the participants were personally fitted in to their equipment. After many hours research, Ben consistently found the one name that came up for helmets and body protectors was Charles Owen.

Charles Owen were delgihted to be involved and more than happily give up their time to travel to secret locations around and about the London area. The identities of the celebrities was so top secret they did not even know who each other was during this period, so Confidentiality Clauses were signed by all involved to safeguard their identities.

The aim of Endemol, and Tim Stockdale and the other trainers involved was to promote riding in a professional and positive manner, de-mystyfing it, hopefully achieving a similar result to that of 'Dancing On Ice' whereby the industry reported a real boost in new enthusiasts. And at the same time raising large sums of money for the benefit of children worldwide.

It was important that the riders all had a uniform appearance whilst also being easily identifiable. Hence the choice of the GR8 helmet, which with its low profile allows the riders face to be seen clearly without overpowering their features. The Body Protectors ended up being screen printed. Initially the Celebs were not keen on wearing the Body Protectors, but swiftly changed their minds during early training, and proceeded to wear them over their customised jackets, provided by Ginette Brogan from John Whitaker International. John Whitaker International had also generously made jackets a size bigger for each of the riders in order that they could wear the protectors underneath, but for reasons of looking trim and flattering the majority opted to wear them over their jackets avoiding the bulkier look.

During the intensive training period calls flew backwards and forwards with requests for replacement, so the staff at Charles Owen were aware that it was proving to be tough on the celebs. As an extra precautionary measure for the final week of competition spare items were sent to twoerlands for each of the riders just in case!.
The Saturday night final was tense and hats had to be taken off to the Celebs (No pun intended) for all they had achieved, and the bravery and determination they had displayed.

'Only Fools on Horses' certainly achieved more for the sport of Equestrianism and its profile than any other campaigns have done in many recent years. it would be great to keep the impetues going.

Canadian Riders: Mexico City CDI*** 2005 (UK/ US) - 16th February 2006

From November 10th - 12th five Canadian riders participated in Mexico city's first ever CDI*** competition. Riders included Pia Fortmuller (young rider), Alexandra Duncan (FEI Junior), Brittany Fraser (FEI Junior), Jessica Rheinlander (FEI Junior), Jade Deter (FEI Childrens), and myself Erika Urff (FEI Junior). The show committee would be providing a horse for each rider. The judges included Axel Steiner, Cara Whitham, Mariette Withages, Gabriel Armando and Mercedes Campdera. Several riders came from Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Costa Rica, USA and Canada.
The facility was set on a hill rich with Spanish culture and the grounds were stationed on a military base, the CDI took place in the covered indoor arena which was decorated with flags of the countries and Mexican colours. The climate was cold in the morning and warm at night.
Each rider would draw for their horse and the unsuitable horses were eliminated. Only the second day were we able to ride and the day prior to the show, we had to jog our horses. This is where the slight turmoil began. My little 15.0HH Lusitanian stallion, Otto, appeared to be off on the left fore leg. They decided they were going to re-jog my horse on the 10th, four hours before I rode the Prix St. Georges.I decided to try another horse on the 9th but it had some connection problems that would be of hinderance. After a quick talk with Ruth Koch, Albrecht Heidermann and my father we decided it wouldn't work. The same owner brought a Ferro stallion that he was willing to pull out of the national competition for me. It was arranged the American rider would ride it first as she did not have a horse, but whether Otto would pass the re-jog was questionable. After her ride she decided she could not manage that horse, so on I got and worked through some of the horses issues. In the end it all went well. The next morning I was to try the Ferro before the re-jog. If Otto was fine I would ride him as I could do more on him. Upon my arrival the vet looked at Otto and said he was fine. He was re-jogged and the result was the same but he passed as there was no horses remaining.
The first day we rode the team test the results were:

Children's FEI- Jade Deter 2nd place Ontario
JR.FEI team- 1st Brittany Fraser Nova Scotia 62.91%
2nd Erika Urff British Columbia 61.71%
3rd Alex Duncan British Columbia 60.85%
5th Jessie Rhinelander Newfoundland and Labrador 59.06%
YR FEI team- 1st Pia Fortmuller Alberta

The final day we rode our freestyles. The results were:
Childrens FEI Final- 1st Jade Deter 65.475%
JR FEI Final- 1st Erika Urff 65.475%
2nd Brittany Fraser 64.800%
4th Jessica Rhinelander 62.400%
5th Alex Duncan 60.650%
YR FEI freestyle- 1st Pia Fortmuller

The award ceremonies were mounted and the winning riders national anthems were played. The top three riders had to proceed to the podium for the final ceremony. It was a big event, even the Mexican TV crews were there. In the end I came home with a huge accomplishment under my belt, as did the other riders.
A huge thank you is owed to the owners of the horses for allowing us to ride them. The quality was certainly different to what we were used to in Canada, but we all ended up with nice horses. The owners bent over backwards and were very supportive. Also the grooms we were supplied with did an excellent job and were a great part of our success. The British Columbia team also recieved generous sponsorship from Charles Owen Helmets and each recieved a Gr8 helmet. We are looking forward to a great working relationship with this very supportive company. Also, a thank you for the show committee for inviting us to participate in their first ever CDI***

Welsh born Sam Thomas who was recently pipped at the post for Leading Conditional Title of the 2004/5 season has been claimed for a further years sponsorship by Charles Owen & Co.
Charles Owen have also become title sponsors for the Pony Racing Series and have agreed ti an initial five years of support. For further information please visit www.ponyracing.info

Sam who himself is a product of the British Racing School in Newmarket is a keen advocate of the initiative and will be on hand offering advise and assistance to the youngsters who participate in the Pony Racing Training Days. These are being run by both the British Racing Scool and the Northern Racing College. It is also hoped that a pilot scheme for those less experienced aspiring young jockeys will be put in place to complement the existing Training Days. Currently in the planning stages this could involve selected riding schools.
Despite his pin-up status as the Third Most Eligable Batchelor in Great Britain 2005, (as voted for by the readers of Company Magazine) Sam remains modest and down to earth about his appeal to the opposite sex, Preferring to concentrate on his Race Riding. His third place was a closely guarded secret and kept from his weighing room peers until he has the misfortune to let the fact slip under scrutiny. However his renewed Charles Owen Sponsorship includes a branded top of the range BMW which should help him out of the chasing pack of race-going Company readers!

Sponsorship: Isabelle Gordon emerges victorious in the Charles Owen Children's Medal- Horse (USA) - 06/10/2005

Isabelle Gordon, age 16 claimed top honours in the Charles Owen Children's Medal - horse at the 2005 Marshall and Sterling League Finals presented by Corona/Lexol. The class attracted a strong field of 57 riders from up and down the east coast. The competition took place in the grand Prix arena at HITS on the Hudson in Saugerties, New York.
Isabelle rode Taylor made a 10 year old gelding owned by Emma Mann-Meginniss. Emma age 19 bought him as a young horse and did most of his training herself. Isabelle is quick to give Emma full credit for everything she has been able to acomplish with Taylor made.
Being named the Charles Owen Children's medal Champion was the biggest win of Isabelle's career, andshe was delighted that her parents were able to share in her success. "The first round just felt wonderful. I don't think I have ever ridden so well, and I had a lot of fun. It was the ride of my life really," said Isabelle.
Isabelle's strong first round gave her scores of 80 and 82 from the judges, putting her in third place overall before being called back for the test. Her second trip went equally well, earning her scores of 82 and 84. Isabelle and her trainer Robert Beck were pretty confident that she would be at least bumped up to second, but they were hoping for first. "And so they started announcing the placings, 12th, 11th, and then they got to second and I was a bunch of nerves," recalls Isabelle."My back number was #133 and I knew that the other girls started with a 2, so when they announced second place'2....' I was just ecstatic."

Sponsorship: Hayley Binder and Shooting Star - Marshall and Sterling Finals 2005 (USA) - 06/10/2006

Haley Binder, age 12, of Dresher, PA and her 7 year old dark bay thoroughbred Welsh cross pony, Shooting star, out shined the rest at the Marshall and Sterling League Finals presented by Corona/Lexol. Haley picked up an impressive list of awards during the three-day Finals at HITS on the Hudson in Saugerties, New York. Her achievements over the weekdn include: Children's Hunter Pony Champion (she won both over fence classes) Grand Hunter Champion, and winner of the Charles Owen Pony Medal Final. In addition Haley also recevied the Champion Year-End Hight-Point award for the Charles Owen Pony Medal and Reserve ChampionYear-End High-Point Award for Children's Hunter. her success at the finals in outstanding considering the fact that Haley, who trains with judy Stephens, has only been riding for 3 years.
"Haley is a natural" says Judy. "She is veryeasy to teach, very receptive and thirsty for knowledge. You give her a course that is just a little tricky and then she wants to try one a little harder. She has such a good eye for a child who has only been riding a short while"

In addition to her Marshall and Sterling success, Haley has also qualified for the Zone 2 USEF Finals and is leading in the standings for the PHSA and EPPHA awards. Haley describes her pony as being "so sweet, she doesn't bite or kick, but she can be difficult to ride because she is very, very strong." Her trainer Judy Stephens had some concerns that Shooting Star was going to be too strong for Haley, especially in such a big ring. "My daughter helps me out with the training and rides Haley's pony on a regular basis, so she did quite a bit of galloping around that Grand Prix ring in the mornings before the hunter classes. Haley loved the size of the ring though. The first thing she said after her trip was, 'I felt like u could just gallop forever'" "I never get really nervous at shows, just really excited. And I was looking forward to competeing in the ring," sadi Haley. Indeed, the Grand Prix ring might be in Haley's future, "she is loving the look of the jumpers, so we're just going to wait and see" said her trainer.
Of all her wins Haley's trainer felt that the Charles Owen Pony Medal was her most impressive performance, "Her round was a little weak and when she came out of the ring she was a little dissapointed. The we found out she was called back to do the second round." Haley's scores in the first round bought her back in tenth place, and her trainer knew it would take some skillful riding in the second round to move her up. "we went over it and I said'you are kind of low in the ranking right now, so you can either be very conservitive in the second round or you can go for it." A determined young rider, Haley did not hesitate in her response, "I want to go for the blue"

Sponsorship: Ahead of the Games (UK) - 21/7/2005

The English Mounted Games Team have recently secured vital sponsorship from lead international safety wear manufacturer Charles Owen in time for the 20th Annual World Team Championships at Pencoed College, Wales.

Charles Owen supplied each team member with vital safety equipment and funding for Pony and Rider clothing. England are the reining World Champions so expectations were high, and the Team under pressure. With challenges from visiting countries New Zeland, Australia, Belgium, Denmark and the USA to name a few, sixteen countries in total were contesting the World Title.

England Team members included Elaine Trevor-Jones (Current Individual World Champion) riding DeeBee, Anthony Walters on Red, James Knott on Sally, Robert Leese riding the aptly named Swift, Melanie Edwards with Verity accompanied and guided by well known character and raconteur Trainer Malcom Trevor-Jones. His inability and extreme reluctance to part with any amount of money is well documented, and therefore the Charles Owen Sponsorship was met with great relief!

The Team went on to perform with their usual consistent flair to retain the World Team Title by a margin of seven marks from Wales with a total of 130 points. Belgium claimed Bronze on 110 and Germany fourth on 96.

Sponsorship: Ontario Young Riders Team Sponsorship (USA) - 20/10/2005

A recommendation from Frankie Chesler has led to the Ontario Young Riders Team securing sponsorship with Charles Owen & Co. Frankie has been supported by Charles Owen since 2003. Her recommendation of the GR8 because of comfort prompted Tonya Henning of Mill Creek Stables to contact the company.

After Tonya made the initial approach obtaining the sponsorship in principal, Sally Sainsbury the Co-Chair of the organisation follwed through with the arrangements. The sponsorship is worth approximately $2000,00 to the teams, and is priceless in tearms of safety for the competitors. As Sally commented "Great News! The Charles Owen helmets are quickly being recognised as having superior fit and comfort compared to other helmets, and you see an ever increasing number of riders wearing them. I'll have to trade my old helmet for a Charles Owen to keep up with the trend!" The teams have chosen to receive the Black/Black GR8 helmet.

The Young Riders Competition is based on the same format as the Olympics and is comparable to the European Young Riders Championship which Charles Owen also supports in Britain. The competition in North America attracts all the top unders 21 riders with their Chef D Equipes and Trainers. Team Chef is Jill Henselwood, a Nation Team Member for many years.

The listed team members are: Mark Leyton, Hannah Anderson, Kim Faringer, Tonya Henning, Laura Kelk, Amanda Knowles, Asta Torkvei and Nicole Denouden.

New Product Distribution: Shoulders Back (UK) - 15/07/2005

'Shoulders Back' How often have you heard that from your instructor as you struggle with endless other body parts and try and rider your horse at the same time? It's never just one thing at once. Now with the help of Charles Owen & Co. you can achieve the ramrod straight position of the classical Dressgae Rider using the 'Shoulders Back' from the US manufacturer Equifit,Inc. Charles Owen have secured exclusive Equestrian Distributorship of the product throughout Europe.

Originally designed with for the Equestrian Athlete, Shoulder Back helps eliminate back pain, retains the upper body, supports good posture and encourages improved breathing by opening the chest cavity. Most importantly it encourages that elegant regal poise so lacking in even the most determined riders, encouraging the confident, tall upright position that enables your equine partner to move freely and lightly underneath you.

Shoulders Back is an elasticated micro-vest like posture aid with flexible adjustable velcro straps, and the breathable fabric is machine washable. Suitable for men and women it is not to be confused for ladies underwear. Available in black or white it can be worn either all day or just an hour depending on your needs. It is unobtrusive and invisible to the rest of the world.

Catherine Zeta Jones wore one following her most recent pregnancy to realign her spine, and Julia Roberts was rumoured to wear one in her role as Erin Brokovich. It certainly helped to create the spectacular upper body silhouette that has since become synonymous with Roberts in that role. Actors and Actresses alike also claim that it helps to improve their vocal ortary ability on stage. Musicians, violinists and cellists, physical therapists, and doctors throughout America have recommended the Shoulders Back system.

It is now being tested in the UK by a leading trainer and pupils on a leading dressage yard. To fairly test the product a mandatory first lesson wearing the product was insisted upon. This resulted in the Shoulders Back system being worn by choice on a daily basis and being declared a revelation.

Pony Club Support: Charles Owen News (UK) - 10/5/2005

The Pony Club has recently introduced a new safety ruling for helmets. A hat tagging system has been instigated whereby hats are required to be Kitemarked and certified to the standards of PAS015, EN1384:1996, BSEN 1384:1997 with the BSI Kitemark. Or snell E2001 with the official Snell label and number or AS/NZS 3838 1998 or AS/NZS 3838 2003 and the SAI Global symbol.

Retailers and Branches are able to co-ordinate a visit with a Charles Owen member of staff who will visit, carry out Hat fitting and 'MOT's' make a multi-media presentation and answer any queries or concerns that members and parents may have. This facitlity is completley free of charge, and ensures that independant advise is available from trained members of Charles Owen staff. As the only Triple Standard Manufacturer Charles Owen has the depth of knowledge and resources to help with a wide range of requirements.

As the Pony Club ruling states, the hats can be checked for certification, but Pony Club volunteers cannot adjust fit, which is essential. This is the responsibility of the members parent or guardian to ensure that the manufacturers guidelines with regard to fit are followed. Hence Charles Owen are offering to help with advice and bespoke fittings.

The Pony Club are yet to stipulate a standard for Body Protectors. Charles Owen advise BETA Level 3 and are happy to advise on requirements and Styles. A popular misconception is that a child can 'grow into' a body protector and this is not the case. The fit of the Body Protector is as important as the fit of a helmet, and the two go hand in hand.

Products: Kicking on with Sergio Grasso (UK) - 10/05/2005

Italian Leather Boot Manufacturer Sergio Grasso has teamed up with Charles Owen to design and manufacture a range of Racing Boots, a market they had previously left untapped. The new range of boots have been designed with the input of Robert 'Choc' Thornton, who has ridden in and tested the boots as they have evolved.

Choc has enjoyed the very exacting development demands of Sergio Grasso which have resulted in a boot with a far superior fit. The ankle has always been a problem area due to leather bagging here as the basic stitching patterns did not allow for adequate adjustment. With amended Sergio design it is now possible to tailor the boots to the last millimeter for the tightest and most streamlined of fits. The different weights and leathers allow a greater range of choice and as Choc said "Even the 'Heavyweight/heavy duty' boots are really light as well as comfortable, and the lightweight boots give a sturdier feel than other lightweight types on the market. These are my choice of boot and I choose them over any other brand. After three winners at Cheltenham I'm not taking them off now. The boots are pure class!"

The light Racing boots are made from young calf leather, soft tanning. The heavier boots are made from very soft Nappa Calf Leather, and the Clarino boots are made from a lightweight patent synthetic material. The quality of all three materials allows Sergio to work with the leather and manipulate stitching for a very custimised fit.

The launch of the Sergio Grasso brand in the racing market is being supported by a Free Made to Measure service for which there is usually a nominal charge. This charge is being absorbed by the Distributor Charles Owen and is available for the first six months. Those wishing to take advantage of this service should contact penny@charlesowen.co.uk or info@charlesowen.co.uk.

His determination, dedication, talent and style stood him apart and he was only just pipped to the Conditionals Jockeys Championship 2002/2003 due to untimely injury.
The APM helmet and Sam's career seemed to be moving on a curve together in the development stages, and so it seemed to be a logical step to secure sponsorship of Sam with Weatherbys. Aaron and Andrea are wonderful Ambassadors who appreciate the importance of guiding and advising young up and coming riders who aspire to one day compete at the same level. Awards: Charles Owen news (UK) - Monday, 28th June 2004

Charles Owen & Co (Bow) Ltd moved from London to the Wrexham Industrial Estate in 1986. They were a company in search of a place where they could expand their manufacturing business . "The difference in attitude by Wrexham Council could not had been different ," said Roy Burek, Managing Director . " The council are very supportive of the business community and that support has helped our business grow."

Ask anybody in the horse world and they will know of Charles Owen . The name is one of the premier brands worldwide and is built upon a reputation of service and quality. A truly important factor when the equipment you buy can mean the difference between life and death.

"In business, we often refer to 'life and death issues'. In Charles Owen, the nature of our product means that it can mean just that to our customers and this makes us all strive that much harder."

The company is a world authority on protecting the body from injury. Its range of riding hats, jockey helmets and body protectors meet all the major standards in the world and are certified by both the British Standards Institute and the american Safety Equipment Institute based in Washington DC. "We must be one of the most inspected companies in the world, but at least we can say that its all for the benefit of our users."

Producing products is just a fraction of their expertise. They sit upon the committees that develop the standards in Britain, in Europe and in the USA. They are involved in the collection and investigation of accident statistics. They were flown out as an expert witness to help the US Eventing Association to adopt the correct helmet rules. Currently, they are involved with helping the US Racing Board ,based in Kentucky, dealing with a dispute with the jockeys and their helmets.

The company is a prolific collector of awards. They were granted a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen in 1984. Four years running, readers from You Horse magazine have voted one of their products, Best Safety Product. Their managing Director was presented with the first ever "Safety Good Guy Award" by the British Horse Society. Last week, Wrexham Civic Trust chose their new factory as "Best New Building for 2003/2004, the only award granted by the Trust this year in all four categories.

" To be the best, you have to be prepared to do things differently. When it came to the building, we wanted to do something that symbolised what Charles Owen was all about. I was over the moon when I was presented with the award, it showed that we had achieved our goal of being the best," said Roy Burek, grandson of the founder.

So what is the secret of their success? " You have to have passion. To feed that passion you have know that you are doing a worthwhile job. Getting a phonecall from a parent whose child's life you have saved feeds our passion."

Charles Owen Limited has customers ranging from riding schools to royalty and the Beckham boys.

The company develops and manufactures protective wear, including riding hats, for the equestrian industry. Based on the Croesfoel Industrial Estate, Charles Owen employs 80 people who work in teams using a combination of traditional skills and modern manufacturing processes.

The company started in business in London in 1911, initially producing army pith helmets. Sales of its riding helmets were given a boost by Esther Rantzen who highlighted the poor safety features of imported helmets on her ‘That’s Life’ TV programme. Today Charles Owen’s hats and other protective clothing are sold in 650 retail units throughout the UK and are exported worldwide. They have an office in the USA specifically to serve the American market.

The company relocated from London to in Cefn Mawr in ?? In 2001 it invested £1.5m in its current custom-built premises.

Roy Burek is the grandson of the founder of Charles Owen and is now owner and managing director of the company. He says the success of the business depends on its ability to embrace change: “We have introduced new methods of working and new technology which enables us to maintain the high quality and craftsmanship associated with Charles Owen while substantially increasing efficiency and production speeds. In doing so we have made the work more interesting – people no longer work on just one aspect of production, they work in small teams and are involved in the full process from start to completion.

“We face competition from the Far East, where they can manufacture more cheaply, but we beat them on comfort, style and fit, as well as on the all-important safety issues.”

Roy Burek was presented with the British Horse Society’s first ever Safety Good Guy Award. He has been involved with the society for a number of years and has instigated several safety initiatives.

Charles Owen now manufactures around 110,00 helmets a year, which still includes a small percentage of pith helmets, worn by the Band of the Royal Marines and by police officers in the West Indies.

Body Protectors and Helmets: Charles Owen Bespoke Fitting (UK/USA) - 24/05/2004

The Ultralight Body Protector has been tried and tested throughout all stages of development by Riders from all disciplines. The design has proved to be light, comfortable and easy to wear.

Fully adjustable quick release fastenings around the waist are additionally secured with aan elasticated belt. The flexible and increasingly lightweight foam moulds to the shape of the body for a look that is flattering and unobtrusive offering protection without restriction. Seperate replacement panels can then be re-ordered by the Retailer to maintain a standard size range of products while also having the flexibility of providing bespoke fittings. The problem of carrying non-standard items is eliminated and capital doesn't remain on the shelf waiting for an unusual customer.

A Medical Card Holder has now been incorporated into the design which can be displayed when required by Ruling Associations such as The Pony Club or BE. When not required it can be tucked discreetly and securely inside the bottom left hand side of the garment. The Medical Card Holder fastens with pop studs into two postitions within the Body Protector itself. Display and non-display. Safety: Hats Fell Apart in Minor Falls (UK/USA) - Tuesday, 13th April 2004

The Pony Club says its rapid change in rules govening hat standards worn by its, members (as reported in ETN, NEWS, February) was a result of an investigation into accidents in which hats literally fell apart.
Bill Cook, risk management director of the Pony Club said: Last summer we received reports of riding hats falling apart in minor falls. A small committee was set up to investigate the problem and to make recomendations to the Pony Club Council. Two instances were investigated and the hats were found to be poorly put together. This committee investigates the quality control requirements of the various certification bodies.
Mr Cook said the group believed that while the Pony Club does not have the knowledge to question the various standards to which riding hats are designed, it should be concerned about the quality of manufacture of the hats worn by the members. He continued: It was therfore, recommended to the Pony Club Council that the rule be changed to require members to wear hats that are certified by an independant organisation that requires batch testing of the finished product. The implications of this change, including the timing, were discussed at lengthbefore the new rule was agreed. The responsibility of the Pony Club, to ensure that members are not exposed to undue risk, was considered to be the principal factor when setting the rule for this important item of safety equipment.

Mr Cook said, however, that the Pony Club would not be carrying a listing of approved hats or recommending makes to its 40, 000 members. The new ruling includes the mark thats indicate to those who purchase hats and to our lay volunteers who check hats, that these criteria are met. It was also agreed that we should not list hats that meet our criteria because of commercial implications of inadvertantly leaving out models and trying to keep the list up to date.
Mr Cook said that the investigation had bought the Pony Club more closely into contact with standards organisations and meant in future the organisation would have more of an input into standards.
This has enabled the Pony Club to continue discussions with these organisations to highlight the importance of the consitency and quality of manufacture of safety products. He said that discussions were still ongoing with BETA, which last month expressed its concern over the suddeness of the Pony Clubs decision to ban certain hats.

Julie Ann Krone: Picking a Winner (UK/USA) - Monday, 23rd February 2004

The most successful female jockey in history has chosen to wear the Charles Owen J3 Helmet. Julie Ann Krone rode over 3500 winners and won 11 riding titles during her flat racing career in the USA. Her prize money earnings were over $80 million. She is worshiped, respected and admired now as seabiscuit was in his era.

Julie is not only recognised for her winners, but for her tenacity and mental approach which has influenced women in all types of sports. She has encouraged millions of sports women to believe that there are no boundaries, only the ones created by yourself.

During her 18 year career Julie never made allowances for being female, and shattered all the myths that girls didn't have the aggresive temperment, mental toughness and physical strength to win at the highest level on the flat. She is the only woman ever to win a Triple Crown Race which she did in 1993 aboard Colonial affaire in the Belmont Stakes.

Inevitably her career has been blighted with injury. Broken hands, a fractured knee, a shattered ankle, a broken knee, concussions. Julie Ann has long been aware of the dangers involved in race riding and this has promted her to choose the ultimate in safety for her own use on the track, the J3. This helmet is being seen as the best protection there is for jockeys both here and in the USA. The new soon to be launched APM helmet has developed from the original concept of the J3.

The very recent outcry by over fifty jockeys who complained about the fit and style of helmets to the Kentucky Racing Commission, preceded the tragic death of Michael Rowland last week. Head injuries claimed his life following a fall at Turfway Park last week. Jockeys are insisting on more safety measures for riders at racetracks and are asking for improved helmets, manufactured to the 3 standards. Albert Fiss of the jockeys Guild Association in Kentucky has approached Charles Owen & Co, as the only triple standard Manufactuer in the world, for their help and advise.

Julie Ann Krone comments 'Word of mouth saves lives. I will be telling everyone I know about the helmets. There comfort and safeness is obvious. They look good on ones face too. Somehow while being big and 'cushy' they appear more streamlined and look nicer than the typical 'bucket head' type helmet. Thank you'.

Sergio Grasso Riding Boots: The Perugia Boot - 1st prize at SPOGA 2003 (Uk/USA) - Monday, 23rd February 2004

The new and Innovative Perugia Boot from Sergio Grasso has been awarded First Prize at SPOGA 2003 in the innovation and Technology Prize Section. This is not the first award that Sergio Grasso has won but follows on from the 1999 Award at KOP (USA) in 1999 for the Sanremo boot.

The famous Italian Boot Maker presented the newest addition to his range of products at the Annual September Trade Fair in Koln, Germany. The Perugia features a sole that has been created with exclusive Procomf technology, and a leg which has been made from natural Strech leather for a supersoft leg-hugging fit.

The most outstanding feature of this boot is its ability to cling and mould closely to the leg. The full grain calfskin is laminated using a special process, similar to streching cotton fabric. The leather used is also stronger and more robust than traditional boot leather, and yet only requires the same care and maintenance as ordinary footwear. In addition its resistance to water is outstanding.

The Perugia boot is supplied exclusively with the Procomf technology. This technological system is based upon the integration and interaction of three elements: the non-slip outer sole produced exclusively for Sergio Grasso by Vibram, the natural leather insole board with steel shank; and the footbed made from a breathable, antibacterial, hi-tech material with activated carbons, incorporating a high density shock absorber.

Racing: The APM Helmet (UK) - Monday, 23rd February 2004

Charles Owen have produced a helmet whose design has been led by the personal input and experiences of the legendary racing phenomonom, Champion Jockey AP McCoy.

Anxious to provide jockeys with superior additional protection around the neck and facial area, Charles Owen started talking with AP a couple of years ago, asking for his input and his concerns about particular types of injuries that could be prevented. Comfort and fit were two of the main concerns, as helmets have to be able to accomodate the shape of the goggles and the position of the head and neck in relation to the racing position.

The harness has been widened to increase coverage of the facial area which now incorporates protective impact absorbing padding, yet still remains a slimline apperance. This padding helps reduce the impact and spread the force of a blow when hitting the ground or being kicked by horses coming from behind, as is the nature of so many falls.

The extra wide harness at the nape of the neck has been dropped lower down, but not far enough to interfere with the position of the head and neck. This section of the harness also contains an impact absorbing material panel, covered in finest softest leather, perforated for breathability and to combat sweat build up. This section protects the sensitive area below the bottom edge of the helmet where jockeys are so often caught when they are on the ground. The inside of the harness is lined with suede to prevent slipiness and moisture build up.

Exposed ears are also very vunerable in the racing field as well as being a source of discomfort when riding out on a cold morning. The harness on the new APM accounts for this with a panel of perforated leather that covers the previously exposed triangular area, and creates a protective recess for the ear. The perforations allow for vital hearing to remain unimpaired and actually reduce wind noise, while providing additional protection.

The APM is ventilated with four small discreet apertures and lined with Coolmax to wick sweat and moisture away from the scalp and fitted with a supersoft headband for comfort and softness against the forehead. The satin lining is stamped with the initials of the man himself as a testimony of his contribution towards the development of this specialty product.

Manufactured and Kitemarked to PAS015 and BSEN 1384 with the additional protective qualities of the revolutionary harness the APM racing helmet was launched at BETA 2004 at the NEC Birmingham.

Point to Point: A Race to the Finish (USA) - Friday, 20th February 2004

Charles Owen & Co recently sponsored at NAPPA. The Northern Area Point to Point Association Finals in Leesburg, Virginia, America.

The meeting is the final for a wide variety of race types, including a Junior Horse Fieldmaster's Chase. This involves the 'jockeys' aged approximately thirteen or fourteen years old, having follow a Fieldmaster over a course of jumps for about two miles. They are not allowed to pass the Fieldmaster at any time. But once the Field has jumped the last fence, they race to the finish line about a quater of a mile away. The aim of the NAPPA races is to teach children the most basic concepts of race riding and the importance of having ridden a well judged enough race to still have 'fuel in the tank' for a finish. The 2003 Junior Fieldmaster Chase was aptly led by Chris Gracie who won the Maryland Hunt Cup this year at the grand age of 16!

The proceeds of the meeting are given to NAPPA and put towards Educational Seminars across America. Youngsters are taught how to Race Ride at Schooling Sessions by Professionals on made horses at different tracks and barns. Chris Gracie is obviously one who has benefited from the scheme, being the youngest ever victor of the Maryland Hunt Cup 2003. Charles Owen believes that by investing in the education of tomorrow riders throughout the disciplines they are helping to safeguard the future of the sport.

The Highlight of the day was 'The Beat Up Cup' invented by Rob Banner.Jr. to raise further funds and showcases some Legends who began as Amateur Race Riders. Six heavier, slightly rotund and older ex-jockeys were invited to participate for a mere $1,000 Entry Fee. Leading Owners, Trainers and Captains of Industry volunteered themselves. Peter Walsh, the official starter was astounded at the lack of manners and the abundance of foul play in evidence. He was later heard to comment that 'age has not improved the character of these men'! Nick Arundel, Director of Great Meadows Equestrian Centre, was the ultimate victor on Man O'War and promtly headed to the bar, leaving his fellow 'jockeys' trailing in his wake-again.

Plans are already afoot for a re-match next year, and Charles Owen and Company will be sponsoring when again the meeting coincides with the Virginia Hound Show and a Reception of Hunting Dignataries at Morven Park, providing an attentive and rapt audience for the day's sport ahead.

His genorosity in sponsoring the 'Horse Sense for Riders' video was a major investment for Charles Owen as was the commitment to part sponsor printing of the BHS Riding and Roadcraft Manual.

Roy is always willing to give freely of his time to support any safety initiative that may make riders safer as they ride out on the road and it has given the BHS great pleasure to recognise the investment he has made in Riding & Road Safety by awarding him the very first British Horse Society 'Safety Good Guy' Certificate.
