Size and fit
To benefit from the protection offered by your body protector, you should ensure the fit of the garment meets the following criteria:
• That it is a close fit worn over lightweight clothing.
• That no discomfort is caused by the garment when you are in a riding position and that you are able to maintain a full range of movements.
• That impact protection is sited over the areas that it is designed to protect.
• When worn correctly a body protector should cover the following areas of the body.
The whole circumference of the torso and the bottom edge should be not less than 25 mm below the rib cage anteriorly, and should reach the pelvis laterally. The arm inlet should be approximately circular and of minimum
dimensions. The top of the back of the body protector should just reach the level of the seventh cervical vertebra (the prominent bone at the base of the neck). The back of the protector should be as long as possible but must not
hit the saddle forcing the garment upwards
The outer cover of the Charles Owen Kontakt 5 is machine washable. It is recommended that the cover is placed in a washing bag to stop the hard components from snagging other clothing or the drum. The front and back main foam panels are removable through closures at the insides of the back and front covers. Panels should be removed carefully by rolling the sides of the foam in, which will aid removal and replacement of the panels. Each panel is made up of layers of foam joined centrally, these must not be separated. If necessary the foam panels may be wiped with a damp cloth. Covers with light or dark colours could change during washing.
Maintenance and obsolescence
For maintenance (i.e. replace pads, cleaning) frequent visual inspection should be made for obvious wear especially after any incident. A severe fall can result in some cell damage of the foam. Obvious signs would be reduced thickness (dents) or a change in the feel of the foam. If in any doubt the garment should be replaced.
Caring for your body protector
Hook and loop fabric fastenings tend to collect horse hair, straw and other associated dirt during wear. To maintain a secure fastening always clean the hook fastenings and loop fabric before use. A stiff brush such as a suede brush is ideal. The zip should be kept clean to avoid jamming or damaging the teeth.
Storage and transport
When storing or transporting your body protector always hang or lay flat in a dry ventilated environment, out of sunlight, avoiding extremes of temperature.
Body protectors give some protection from impacts consequent on falling from a horse. Impacts may be against soft or hard ground, or objects such as trees, vehicles, posts or rails. Fallen riders may also be kicked, trodden on, or crushed by a horse.
This horse rider’s body protector is designed to protect the wearer from minor impacts which may occur during horse riding activities only. It is not considered to be suitable or offer protection against injuries which may occur if used in sporting activities other than equestrian.
For additional protection other items of PPE such as a helmet of the appropriate standard should be considered. When choosing a helmet, make sure it does not come into contact with any part of the body protector to avoid
possible neck injury.
Your body protector is designed with an active join which allows for a rib cage to expand without restriction from the garment. Your body protector is adjustable using the hook fasteners at the waist sides and over the
shoulders allowing for individual sizes. The hook fabric on each tab must be in contact with both strips of loop fabric at all times, otherwise the body protector will not be held securely.
The foam panels must overlap at all times, otherwise an excessive area of the reduced thickness foam will expose you to increased risk of injury.
Warning To ensure that the garment is fitted correctly, you will find visual fitting aids in the form of bright orange strips, one either side of the waist, and one strip on each shoulder. When the garment is fitted correctly these bright orange strips will be covered completely by the panels.
Warning The front zip should always be fastened completely to the top and the covered padded flap should be in the closed position for maximum protection.
Please make sure on the belt you have inserted the threepronged clip on the front into the plastic housing.
To undo the belt, press the button on the plastic clip to trigger the release mechanism. At the shoulders there is a hook and loop strips to hold both front and back panels together.
The minimum fit of a garment is when the hook strip on the side panel under the arms and over the shoulders is completely covering the brush strips.
The maximum fit of a garment is when the orange warning strips on the sides and over the shoulder’s are completely obscured.
