Weston Park Wrapped Up Great Year For Charles Owen British Pony Eventing Team
Last weekend’s event at Weston Park marked the end of another fabulous season for the Charles Owen British Pony Eventing Squad. Charles Owen has been the title sponsor of the British Pony Eventing Squad for over a decade now and is proud to support the riders and ponies from their first Team experience. Sponsoring the Pony Squad allows Charles Owen to use its century of experience to focus on riders of the future.
The 2014 season got underway at the end of May when the Pony Programme members competed at the Brand Hall CCNP2* British Pony Championships. The riders were vying for a spot on the European team as well as being named British Pony Champion. Thomas Tulloch riding Spirit VI came out on top with Isabelle Upton riding Alfie XI not far behind – earning their tickets to Ireland for the Europeans.
The highlight of the 2014 season for the Pony Programme was definitely the European Pony Championships which were held this year in Millstreet, Ireland. The Charles Owen British Pony Eventing Team consisted of Oliver Williams riding Bobnamara, Isabelle Upton riding Alfie XI, Thomas Tulloch riding Spirit VI, and Chelsea Pearce riding Catherston Nutsafe. The team battled intense weather conditions to bring home the silver medal, and Isabelle Upton took home the individual silver medal as well. The team wore Charles Owen Leather Look Ayr8s for the dressage and show jumping and 4Star helmets and Kontakt 5 body protectors in the cross-country – looking stylish while kitted out in the safest gear for the event.
The 2014 Pony Season finished with a hat trick as Thomas Tulloch won the Weston Park CCNP2*, which served as the Autumn Pony Trials. Once again riding Spirit VI, the 15-year-old finished on his dressage score of 45 besting the field of 27. Hot on his heels was the pony team stalwart, Catherston Nutsafe, ridden by Chelsea Pearce who finished on 46.3 for second.
“Charles Owen congratulates all of the members of the Charles Owen British Pony Eventing,” said Managing Director, Roy Burek. “It was a pleasure to cheer the Squad on throughout the year and I look forward to watching their future success.”
About the British Pony Programme sponsored by Charles Owen
Each year the Pony European Championships are held for riders between the year of their 12th and 16th Birthday riding ponies between 142cm and 148cm (14hh - 14.2hh). The Pony Programme is both a competition and training programme designed to produce a team that will represent Great Britain at the European Championships as well as to coach and develop riders for pony teams in the future.
British Eventing welcomes everyone who wishes to participate, however it must be noted that the competitions included in the Pony Programme are run at Novice level (3'7") with Intermediate level dressage and that riders and ponies should be competent to compete at this level of technicality.
Members who are not yet competing at Novice level above and would like to get involved can register and participate in all the training activities to better prepare them for pony trials.
Great Britain has a consistent track record at the Pony European level. In 2013 the Pony squad took team and individual gold at the FEI European Pony Championships in Arezzo, Italy and in 2014 team and individual silver in Millstreet, Ireland.
